Hibernation Option in Windows XP/ 2003 and Windows Vista

Hibernation is an excellent power management tool especially for your PC. When you hibernate your PC, it saves everything you are doing so when you turn it on, you don’t have to wait for the Windows to boot from the beginning. When the PC recovers from hibernation, it reloads everything you were doing before the PC was hibernated.

There are chances that there is no hibernate options on your Desktop PC. If you want to enable hibernate feature..
  1. Click on Start then click Run
  2. Now type powercfg.cpl and press Enter
  3. Now in the new windows that appears, click on the Hibernate Tab. Then Check the Enable hibernation and Click OK
  4. There it shows the free disk space and disk required to hibernate.
Now Hibernation Option is Enabled, now how do we use it ? Where can we see it ?
  1. Click on start then click on Turn Off Computer
  2. Now you can see the 3 buttons Stand By, Turn Off and Restart. Now in this scenario if you press the Shift Key the Stand By button will change into Hibernate.
  3. Yeah ! you need to hold the shift key and click on Hibernate to hibernate your PC. The Windows will save your memory state and turn off. Once you power back on your computer you get it in the same state you left it..
If you’ve found that your Hibernate option is missing from Windows Vista, it might be from running the disk cleanup wizard and removing the hibernate files. This is due to a known bug in Vista that might not have been hotfixed already. Turning it back on is very simple...

  1. Type cmd into the start menu search box, and use Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open in administrator mode. Or you can also right-click the item in the menu and choose Run as Administrator.
  2. From the command prompt, type in the following command:
    • powercfg /hibernate on
  3. You’ll have to restart your computer before it will take effect.
