Disk clean up

Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) is a computer maintenance utility included in Microsoft Windows designed to free up disk space on a computer's hard drive. The utility first searches and analyzes the hard drive for files that are no longer of any use, and then removes the unnecessary files. There are a number of different file categories that Disk Cleanup targets when performing the initial disk analysis:
  • Remove temporary Internet files.
  • Remove downloaded program files. For example, ActiveX controls and Java applets that are downloaded from the Internet.
  • Empty the Recycle Bin.
  • Remove Windows temporary files.
  • Remove optional Windows components that you are not using.
  • Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

You can start Disk Cleanup, by doing any of the following:

Method#1
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type cleanmgr, and then click OK.

Method#2
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.

Method#3
  1. In Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click the disk in which you want to free up space, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the General tab, and then click Disk Cleanup.
